YuGiOh! New Card Review - ''Philia Regis''
Ive been wanting to something like this for a while, and now I have a place to do it! Here on this blog!
So, this will be my thoughts on the new yugioh card that was revealed on the 29th of December; ''Philia Regis''
Heres the translation (Taken from ygorganization.com):
妖竜の禁姫 Philia Regis [Kanji: Forbidden Princess of the Fairy Dragons]
Level 8 DARK Dragon Fusion Effect Monster
ATK 3000
DEF 2500
Materials: 1 Dragon Fusion Monster + 1 Level 7 or higher monster
You can only use the (1)st and (2)nd effects of this card’s name each once per turn.
(1) During the Main Phase (Quick Effect): You can target 1 card your opponent controls or in their GY; banish it, then, if you banished a card from the field, return 1 Dragon monster you control to the hand.
(2) At the start of your opponent’s Battle Phase, if this card is in your GY: You can return 1 Dragon monster you control to the hand/Extra Deck, and if you do, Special Summon this card.
First thoughts? This card actually seems pretty good. Especially in one certain deck. Dragonmaids of course. They got new support recently, and this is obviously a card that, while still generic and usable in other decks, is very tailored for dragonmaids. And you know what? Good for them, dragonmaids are cool and its a fun strategy. And while their endboards with the new support were way more powerful than what they could set up before, this card will hopefully add another piece of unique and strong interaction to their setup.
I'm personally not a dragonmaid player though, so I can not guarantee this card will see play in the deck. But it seems like a good card that will probably see experimentation though.
But, it's a level 8 dragon fusion monster. So there is one other deck that could also make very good use of this card. And that is of course Branded. Now branded is still a very strong strategy, despite what some people will lead you to believe. Its great sources of card advantage, and utilization of pretty much every space on the board (Hand, field, graveyard and banishment) ensures that branded still has the capacity to play through a lot. Anyway, branded loves its level 8 fusion dragons, so this card is a possible include in the deck. Though the branded extra deck is one of the tightest extra decks that exists, so finding space for it could be an issue. But thats up to the player themselves to figure out, isnt it? I personally am a branded player, so I can give my full 2 cents this time. And I dont think I'll play it. Maybe if I ever want to have fun and play a lower power version of branded, fitted for more casual play, I'd throw in cards like this. But for now, my extra deck is already full.
It is also a possible super poly target of course. Dragon fusions are some of the most plentiful fusions around. And the other material being just any level 7 or higher monster is very good. Far from the best of course super poly target ofc. But I don't think it's impossible to see this being made with super poly to dismantle some boards now and then.
Final thoughts, I think this card is fine. On its own in a vacuum it's a good and strong card. In utilization it probably will find its home in dragonmaid, but probably nothing else outside of it. Though I think its a card to remember that it exists.
Thanks for reading!
